Lincoln as Commander in Chief PresentationIn the following Prezi presentation, you will be guided to a series of primary and secondary sources to discover Lincoln's role as commander in chief during the Civil War. In particular, you will explore Lincoln's relationship with his own generals during the war. President Lincoln had a series of Union commanders early in the Civil War, including General George McClellan (pictured above meeting with Lincoln). Lincoln had a contentious relationship with General George McClellan, who Lincoln viewed as unwilling to commit his men to battle. He had a closer relationship with General Ulysses S. Grant, who he entrusted with the safety of his own son, Robert Lincoln in 1865. There are numerous letters, telegrams and readings about Lincoln and his generals. This website is intended to provide an overview of Lincoln as commander in chief and whether or not Lincoln overstepped his powers as president. This is intended for high school American history students during their study of the Civil War. Click on the link below to access the Prezi presentation. |
